HAWTHORNE, Calif. – Hawthorne police arrested a man for fatally shooting the mother of his child during a custody exchange at the police station on Sunday evening. Authorities report that the shooting occurred at 6 p.m. in the area of 12500 Hawthorne Boulevard.

The couple, who share a 17 month-old daughter, planned to meet at the station to do a custody exchange.

Authorities report that the incident occurred outside the doors of the police station. As the victim got ready to take custody of her child, the suspect emerged from the parking lot with a shotgun. Then, the man fatally shot her in front of the couple’s child and the victim’s mother. Authorities say the suspect did not injure the victim’s child and grandmother.

The suspect has since been identified as Jacob Munn, 31. Immediately after the incident, the man fled the scene in his truck. After a short exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officers, the suspect abandoned his vehicle and ran away on foot.

Ultimately, the suspect hid in an auto parts store close to the scene of the crime at around 9 p.m. Police set up a containment zone around the store and warned the public to avoid the area. Finally, at about 9:15 p.m., police arrested the man within that zone.

The incident subsequently prompted the closure of Hawthorne Blvd. southbound.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives are currently assisting the Hawthorne Police Department in further investigation.
