This past year has just been problem after problem for the World at large. As well as trucking. I mean, there were truckers who got laid off! Not to mention a truck that was attacked during a protest and all the intense pressure to deliver essential goods while not getting sick. How can anyone expect to live proper when the whole landscape of everything you held dear to yourself has been tarnished and pretty much made to be lamer? Is this possible? I don’t know. Read a book. But don’t make history out to be the end-all, be-all. As far as I believe, your best bet in this landscape is to just embrace any possibility of normalcy with prosthetics. Isn’t that safe? I think it’s safe. It’s probably safe.
Trucking Into The New Year
Let’s start with the obvious. Elaine Chao is out. Pete Buttiegieg is in. He’s going to start off leading the Department of Transportation as the new secretary. But it won’t be as easy as he thinks. President Biden is planning to create “a national effort aimed at creating jobs we need to build a modern, sustainable infrastructure now and deliver an equitable clean energy future.” And sure, maybe it’s not Buttiegieg’s first pick at a job in the Capitol. But it’s close enough, right?
Moving on, another big deal for truckers has been regulation changes. The Federal government is designing new rules to reduce delays during driver shortages while in turn making the industry more nimble for the sake of preparing when life goes into DEFCON 1… Again. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has also announced a new waiver which’ll reportedly “provide relief for CDL and commercial learner’s permit holders whose licenses expired after March 1, 2020, and medical cards expired after September 1, 2020.” That’s pretty helpful. As the new extension is going to effect through February 28th, 2021.
Finally, with emissions looming now more than ever, there’s a simple goal that Biden is starting for trucking. He wants to make sure that the States achieves “a 100% clean energy economy.” Can we anticipate to reach net-zero by 2050? Maybe!
