Many hope the reopening of the port will help restart the economy.

The Port of Baltimore, which has been closed since March after a carrier ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse. Since the collision, the U.S. Army Corps has been working on cleaning up the debris in the port in order to reopen the port for trade as soon as possible. The Engineers team of the Army Corps confirmed this week that they are on track to have the port reopened by the end of May. Major General William Graham of the Corps releases a statement to the House of Representatives’ transportation committee stating, “…the Corps is on track to complete the removal of section four by mid-May and to restore two-way traffic to the federal channel by the end of May.”

At this present moment, they are continuing to clean up the port so that they can keep to their word.

The U.S. Army Corps Engineering team were not the only ones who responded to the port to aid in its reopening process. The Federal Highway Administration and the Coast Guard both provided aid as well. At the same time that they have all been working on cleaning up the port, they have also been working to learn more about the incident behind the bridge’s collapse. The cargo ship Dali, owned by a company based in Singapore, had experienced numerous issues with power leading up to the collision. The city of Baltimore is actually in a legal battle currently with the ship owners, having sued them claiming negligence because the ship was “clearly unseaworthy.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is who is specifically behind the investigation.

The NTSB not only is looking into what exactly went down with the collision, they are also looking at how to continue forward to prevent something like this again. They are working to reassure people that incidents like this are a rarity and will not occur again. Lives were lost due to the accident and infrastructure was destroyed, so they are hopeful that this does not happen again in the future.

The rebuilding process has been very expensive, but many are hopeful that the resumption of trade will help aid in paying off some of the process. There has been no specific date of reopening released yet, but if they keep to their word, the port should be open within the next two weeks.
