When it comes to driver safety on the road, these days you can never be too cautious. With driver safety becoming an increasingly more important priority for most, things like dash cams have become increasingly more popular. Along with dash cams that face the road, more and more drivers are also beginning to have cameras that face themselves. Road-facing dash cams have been go-tos for years now, but the driver-facing camera movement is only just now starting to take off, but at a high rate. The reason drivers want these new cameras changes driver to driver, but there is some consistency in explanations that can be seen across the board.

Reports show that only about 21% of drivers use driver-facing cameras for now but that the use rate is increasing.

Despite dash cameras that face the road being quite normalized, many drivers still struggle to adjust to the idea of constant recording. Due to this, even more drivers are struggling to accept a camera facing themselves operating the vehicle. Some companies require the use of the cameras while others leave it up to the driver. However, as more cameras are used and more evidence from the cameras proves to be beneficial to the driver and/or company owner, camera use will become more regulated, more normalized, and more often required.

We are already starting to see some of the benefits of having cameras used in general, particularly driver-facing ones. Both inward and outward facing cameras help improve safety for the vehicles as they often act as deterrents from thieves and vandals doing anything to the vehicle. Additionally, the cameras also help exonerate drivers in accidents. Road-facing cameras can show that the driver was not responsible for the accident as they can show when other vehicles made illegal and at fault endeavors. Driver-facing cameras help support this notion as they can show a driver was not at fault by proving they were not distracted.

In addition to exonerating drivers, the camera type can even reduce insurance rates.

In some cases, having cameras on drivers will allow them to show their focus on safe driving, which will make insurance providers feel more comfortable with them and in turn lower their rates. As more and more cases arise in which truckers are protected by having their driver-facing cameras, more cameras will be put into use. Because of this, experts anticipate a spike in the use of these cameras in vehicles.
