Interstate drivers need the UCR filing!

The Unified Carrier Registration is one of the many major filings needed for truck drivers. The registration came after a federal law passed in 2005 that established a program for commercial vehicle operators. This program specifically applied to drivers who did interstate business and with the program, drivers had to pay an annual fee. This annual fee is the UCR registration fee. The fee amount varies as it is based on fleet size. The bigger a fleet is, the bigger the fee is. The UCR is a permit type that you must have on file if you plan to cross state lines. If you do not have an active UCR on file, you will be subject to penalties.

So, who needs a UCR filing?

To be specific, owner/operators and anyone who operates a commercial vehicle while conducting interstate business must have an active UCR filing. This applies only to those who operate a commercial vehicle that has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 pounds, is marked as a vehicle carrying hazardous materials, or is made to carry more than 10 passengers. If the vehicle operated is less than 10,000 pounds, does not carry hazardous materials, or does not hold 10 or more passengers, then you do not need to file the Unified Carrier Registration.

How can I file the UCR?

Well, to put it simply, you can submit the UCR filing with us! You will simply have to give us the information we need to complete the filing and then we will complete it on your behalf! We have been in the filing business, helping truckers simplify the filing process since 2006! The best part is we can help with both the initial filing and the renewal filings annually. We are able to complete renewals even if you did not previously file with us. Essentially, once you let us know that you need a UCR filing, we will collect the information, such as your business name, fleet size, and gross vehicle weight ratings. Then, we will submit the filing for you and send you your permit confirmation as soon as it is ready!

How will I remember my annual filing?

Filing with us means you will never forget about an upcoming renewal! We have a reminder system that sends out reminders to all of our clients to let them know they have a filing renewal coming up. We issue multiple reminders leading up to the due date to make sure you do not miss the deadline to renew. However, in case you happen to miss our reminders, the UCR is a type of filing that happens based on a calendar year, meaning the renewal period is the same every year. It opens in October and ends when the renewal is due, on December 31.

Our reminder system applies to any filing done with us, not just the UCR. That means any time you complete a filing with us here at DOT Operating Authority Inc., if it is a permit that needs to be renewed, you will get reminders when it is time to renew. This happens no matter if the renewal happens annually or biannually, or if the permit runs on a calendar year or is based on when you file originally.

From the USDOT Number, to the UCR, we are here to help you stay compliant anytime you are on the road!
