If newly proposed legislation about electronic logging devices (ELDs) becomes law truckers will have 2 more years for installing ELDs. On July 19 Brian Babin who announced the bill submitted the ELD Extension Act to Infrastructure Committee as well as to the House Transportation. Under present law and regulation, the mandate is planned to be enforced December 18th, 2017 – five months later.
Rep. Babin said: “While technology like ELD’s have great promise, I didn’t come to Washington to force those ideas on small businesses – and neither did President Trump. If trucking companies want to continue implementing and using ELD’s, they should go right ahead. But for those who don’t want the burden, expense, and uncertainty of putting one of these devices into every truck they own by the end of the year, we can and should offer relief.”
In a press release Robbin told “If trucking companies want to continue implementing and using ELDs, they should go right ahead. But for those who don’t want the burden, expense, and uncertainty of putting one of these devices into every truck they own by the end of this year, we can and should offer relief.”
Into the MAP-21 highway funding bill of 2012, ELD mandate was written which requires all commercial trucks to install ELDs in two years of publication of the final law. For the extension to take place, the House and Senate should approve the bill. In addition, it should also be signed by the president no matter as a separate rule or as an amendment to another bill.
OOIDA applauded the proposed legislation since it tried to challenge the ELD mandate in the Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court did not accept the mandate.
