Hyundai has a new hydrogen fuel-cell truck that will come into America before the Tesla Semi. The carmaker has begun to expand its electric car lineup with the launch of the new Ioniq 5. It has been sold under the Ioniq which is a dedicated EV sub-band.
Hyundai Leads with the Fuel-Cell Vehicle Charge
Hyundai is at the head of the pack with the fuel-cell vehicle charge as most automakers are focusing on EVs. Along with Toyota, in fact, Hyundai is one of the only mainstream car manufacturers. It sells hydrogen-fuel cell vehicles. Moreover, the Nexo is the only hydrogen-powering car in Hyundai’s current model lineup.
However, the carmaker also sells commercial fuel-cell trucks like the Xcient Fuel Cell. Moreover, it is the “world’s first mass-produced, heavy-duty truck powered by hydrogen.”
Mercedes-Benz is still testing its own fuel-cell trucks. The electric Tesla Semi has been delaying. In fact, Hyundai has updating the Xcient Fuel Cell for 2021 with what is called bolder styling elements, and in fact, improving performance.
Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell
The grille has been redesigning with new chrome details for 2021. Also included are multi-dimensional mesh patterns in addition to blue accents. It gives the truck what is a bolder presence. It powers the 2021 Xcient Fuel Cell which is an electric motor with 469 horsepower. The 2021 Xcient Fuel Cell has 1,724 lb-ft of torque. Moreover, it is also equipping with a more sturdy and more fuel-effective 180-kW hydrogen fuel cell system with two 90-kW fuel cell stacks.
Large Hydrogen Tanks
Combining a storage capacity of around 68 pounds of fuel is what is containing in seven large hydrogen tanks. Therefore, a 72-kWh-powered set of three batteries does provide an extra source of power. Moreover, with this setup, the 2021 Hyundai Xcient Fuel Cell is set to have a range of around 250 miles. Thus refueling a full tank of hydrogen takes around eight to 20 minutes.
Rigid Body Configuration
The Xcient Fuel Cell for 2021 is now available in a 6×2 rigid body configuration as well as the 4×2 option that was available for 2020.
Hyundai has shipped 45 Xcient Fuel Cell trucks to Switzerland since it launched. The trucks have achieved a cumulative driving range of over 466,000 miles. Thus have reduced carbon emissions by around 585 tons. Hyundai will ship another 140 units to Switzerland by the end of the year. The goal is to ship 1,600 heavy-duty fuel cell electric trucks in Europe by 2025.
